G2 Research .38/.357mag Rounds!

Finally, some new revolver Ammunition! It has certainly been a good while. With the semi-auto pistol being the most recent go to pistol platform it seems like innovation of revolver ammunition has almost came to a halt. I carry a S&W model 60 snub nose .38 daily as a back up gun mainly due to its size and comfortability in the ankle holster. As well as revolvers being one of my most nostalgic platforms to handle.

I ran both calibers through several revolvers of mine, the S&W model 60 snub nose, the Ruger security six 4”, as well as a Taurus 6” with a few rounds through a Henry golden boy. Due to limited ammunition I couldn’t go as far in depth as I wanted to but I was rather impressed with the performance out of each platform. These rounds pack quite a bit of kinetic energy! Keep in mind these are solid copper 105 grain fragmenting projectiles. Looking at the projectile itself you can only imagine the devastation these will cause when it fragments on impact.

Keep in mind this round is a fragmenting round. From what I have recovered it appears to have 5 fragments that weigh roughly 12-15 grains followed by a give or take 46-50 grain solid slug. These rounds will not only leave one big hole but it will have 5 other wound channels. As compared to other self-defense hollow points that will expand and leave only one wound tract. It makes me glad I am not a surgeon. I can definitely tell that G2 research has listened to its consumers and upgraded from the R.I.P. projectiles with this new design.

Getting back to the kinetic energy I observed while shooting through various objects. I started out with a few rows of pumpkins as they were readily available and watermelons are out of season. The end result was absolute destruction. They were just firm enough to get the projectile to fragment. The entrance hole was rather standard but the exit holes were already displaying the fragments channels making some solid 2” exit holes absolutely destroying them. After about 6 rounds with a few turns of them they were completely falling apart.

Immediately following the pumpkins I went and purchased quite a few 5 gallon buckets from lowes to fill with water and shoot down into. The end results were absolutely devastating to the buckets. Aiming directly center or the almost 12” opening diameter I did not get a blow out on the bucket. The slug however, went through the 18”s of water to penetrate the bottom and go around 1 ½”-2”s into the ground. Next, I tried 2 buckets while aiming a few inches off center, same results both times complete blowouts of the buckets about halfway down them from the fragments. These hollow points are deep and devastating.

My final thoughts, these rounds are just right for everyday carry. In my opinion they have the perfect amount of penetration and devastation to put down an assailant in a decent range. As well as the wound tracts giving you an edge in case your aim is a little off you have several chances to hit something critical. If you would like to snag a box or two to test for yourself I would highly recommend it! Check them out here.
