G2 Research 12 Gauge R.I.P. A Devastating Home Defense Round

So, immediate thoughts after checking out one of the R.I.P. 12-gauge rounds is how could anyone dream to walk away after being shot by one. Well, at least that was my initial thought anyways because they do not leave anything to the imagination with the see-through shell hull. While shooting these for this review I actually gave them a nickname, I called them “juice rounds” because it was liquifying all of my melons. Do remember these rounds are for smoothbore barrels only no chokes at all.

To the review, these rounds feature a 303 grain projectile that fragments as designed into 6 separate paths through the target. I managed to save one of the rounds for dissection once the slug itself was in my hand you can appreciate fully the craftsmanship. The initial tip is actually beveled to a semi sharp edge to punch a clean hole and allow the target to come into the slug and break off the fragments. Actually, every facet is semi-sharp not like a razor blade but at least a gas station knife sharp which is pretty awesome for a slug projectile. The lethality design of this R.I.P. shotgun round, I have to give it to the creators they created a spawn of the devil himself with this one.

So, my biggest concern was over penetration as with any slug fired in defense of a household especially with a solid following of homeowners using a shotgun as a nightstand weapon. So, doing my best with what is at my disposal I made a scaled down version of an interior wall of layers drywall, 2×4 studs, insulation, and finally another layer of drywall. I placed three gallons of water in a triangle formation to simulate a human target approximately 3 feet away so my small interior wall. Fired one shot from 5 yards away and hit close to center on the front gallon of water and noticed all 3 gallons were rapidly leaking themselves empty. That means the slug performed as they said it hit hard, fragmented, and left devastation but id did not pass through my makeshift wall. It did however have 2 of the fragments roughly two feet apart one inside the drywall and one that was stuck into the insulation.

Defense type ammunition is always hard to find because it is commonly expensive and not a lot of people want to use any to actually test what they buy. I can honestly say that if you pick up a box of these rounds for home defense, although I hope you never have to use them, if you do the threat will be over with a center mass shot placement. G2 Research has came a long way from being any kind of gimmick these rounds will put the assailant down quick, fast, and in a hurry. You can check them out here.
