Smoke Composites Carbon Fiber Parts review

Carbon fiber is a lightweight material used for a variety of products and has been a staple in the firearms community for years. We’ve seen it on holsters, pistol grips and many other parts. But there is one company making waves with carbon fiber. Smoke Composites is making products made completely out of carbon fiber.

We’ll start with their stocks. They have two primary stocks. One is a rifle length and the other is a carbine length, they are fixed and made completely out of carbon fiber with only the buffer extension being made from aluminum for a secure fit into the AR lower. The two different styles of these stocks are interesting, first is there stock without an mlok support bar, just a straight stock, the second being a triangular stock with an mlok support bar. I have used this particular stock on my AR10 in the rifle length size. It is nice and extremely light, fitting it into my matrix arms lower was easy and it has held fast and never wavered. They do offer a cheek riser to keep the shooter comfortable while aiming down their sights or scope. While not designed to be abused like a standard 7075 buffer tube, for a bench shooter or a competition shooter this stock is perfect, it might even be good for a lightweight hunting rig.

The handguards are where Smoke Composites truly shine. While being one of the few companies that makes a full carbon fiber handguard they make the most appealing and the lightest that I could find. With their average 15in handguard coming in at 8oz. While the 15in handguard is their average they make a wide variety of handguard lengths and upon request will make a custom length handguard. I have a custom 17.75in on my 26in AR10. Smoke Composites does not just make AR15 handguards, that make two other styles. The pistol caliber carbine and the AR10 are also part of their possible handguards. The AR10 is self-explanatory, but the PCC is a bit different.

Most PCCs do not use a classic gas system, my AR9 is a blow back pistol, there is no gas tube, gas block or gas system at all leaving just the barrel. This means that the PCC handguard is much slimmer and makes it easier to grip around the whole guard. My guard is 7inches and when paired with my Timney Calvin Elite trigger I am jumping from target to target without an issue. My PCC has become my favorite firearm and has been quickly racking up rounds with my 33rd magazines. One of the issues I dealt with, with my aluminum handguards was heat. The barrel would heat up fast and the heat distribution would cause me to have to put the firearm down after a few hundred rounds as I was not able to touch it even with gloves on. My carbon fiber handguard doesn’t have this issue, I have dropped so many rounds through my 9mm to the point that I was having to stop due to the heat from the barrel not from the handguard. I put around 400rds through it before the barrel made it too hot to hold.

When it comes to strength some may question the durability of the handguard and if it can support having attachments added to it. My PCC has a zero-bravo hand stop attached via mlok and I never had an issue tightening it down and using it effectively. My AR10 currently has a Spartan Precision carbon fiber bipod on it and I moved the bipod around and used it at different angles without a single issue from the handguard. A fellow reviewer Roger Frame has also received a set of equipment from Smoke Composites. He decided to go above and beyond and use the handguard on a spartan precision tripod and allow the rifle to rest freely without any support.

My final thoughts, Smoke Composites is making a product that if you are looking for parts for a lightweight build, something that looks goods and is strong enough to be used for even hog hunts with tripods. Coming in a variable price with an increased cost of 25 for a custom length (this can change depending on the length wanted). Smoke Composites can do up to 24in for a handguard.
